In my gender and violence class right now we’re looking at cultural representations of gender violence, and we were tasked to come up with an artistic expression of a gender violence topic of our choice.
My group chose to look at disney movies, and the ways in which gender violence is represented in them. We decided to create domestic abuse PSA’s involving disney characters instead of real people. This particular poster uses the characters Belle and the Beast from Beauty and the Beast. It is referencing the fact that Belle stays with a man (literally a Beast) who is incredibly abusive towards her in the beginning of their relationship - he takes her away from her family, locks her up, screams at her and threatens physical violence. I’d love to hear opinions on this controversial topic!
